Phone cards used to be one of the only inexpensive ways to connect with friends and family from across the nation and around the world. Today, many people use their computers to make these calls for little or no charge using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services but may not know how to protect themselves during the process.
VoIP services turn traditional analog signals, like those used in traditional phone lines, into a digital signal so they can be transmitted over the Internet, allowing users to make phone calls using a broadband Internet connection.
Many VoIP providers, like Skype and Vonage, offer their services for free or for a minimal one-time fee or monthly payment. Depending on the VoIP provider, service may only work over a computer, a special VoIP phone, or with a traditional phone line and VoIP adapter. Whichever method is used, consumers can still be vulnerable to scammers, viruses and malware.
“Because VoIP uses an Internet connection, data is being shared over the Internet,” said Matthew Fehling, BBB President/CEO. “Consumers should take the same precautions they normally would when they are online, to prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.”
BBB offers the following tips to stay safe when using VoIP services using your computer:
- Some VoIP providers allow users to create online profiles. Do not post anything on your profile you are not comfortable with the whole world seeing or having access to.
- Do not use your real name as your screen name, if one is required.
- Review and set your privacy settings.
- Download upgrades and other software only from your VoIP service provider’s web site.
- Don’t click on hyperlinks as they can have viruses and malware that can damage your computer. Also make sure your virus software is up-to-date.
- Consumers should also beware that not all VoIP services can be used for emergency services like 911.
- When signing up for a VoIP service, read the contract carefully and know the process and any fees that may be associated with canceling your service.
